Welcome to DNI.Amsterdam, Picnic! Please tell us about your company, and how your tech team allows customers to order food and groceries through a simple app.

Picnic is a fast-growing app-only supermarket that operates in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. Our unique business model, which relies on a hyper-efficient distribution system, enables us to deliver groceries to our customers free of delivery costs and at the lowest possible prices, and our tech team plays a crucial role in making this happen by developing and maintaining our consumer-facing app, developing our warehouse management and distribution systems, working on security and infrastructure. What we build is simple and user-friendly software, which makes it easy for customers to order their weekly groceries and have them delivered straight to their door.

Please tell us about all of the things that make your Amsterdam-based tech team and your office unique.

Our Amsterdam-based tech team is a diverse group of talented engineers, product managers, and designers from all over the world. What makes our office unique is our open and collaborative culture, which encourages everyone to share their ideas and opinions, regardless of their job title or level of experience. We get plenty of opportunities to grow, including the Picnic Tech Academy, Lunch & Learn sessions, and tailored soft skills training. Our office is a lovely open space with unlimited breakfast, coffee, and snacks. You won’t go hungry during lunchtime either: our lovely kitchen crew prepares the best lunch every day. And our office is pet-friendly!

Working for Picnic is special because you get to work on cutting-edge technology that is revolutionizing the grocery industry, while also making a positive impact on the environment and society. But wait, there’s more! Our team is passionate, diverse, and supportive, and we offer ample opportunities for growth and development.

What’s your impact on the Amsterdam tech community, and what was the biggest lesson your tech team learned during the pandemic?

We’re always in close contact with the many tech communities that our wonderful city of Amsterdam has. As an example, we regularly host meetups for the Amsterdam Python and Java user groups, as well as for the Data Science and Product Management communities. Some of Picnic’s tech ladies have even been featured in StartupAmsterdam’s women in tech billboard campaign last year, and we’re so proud of them. During the pandemic, one of the most striking lessons for our team was how we were designated by the Dutch government to be a part of the “essential companies”, and we didn’t take this responsibility lightly. It just proved it to us yet again that our mission touches the lives of millions of people in a meaningful way. Tech for good at Picnic is what drives us, and we are still growing (and hiring!)

Please share an overview of your tech openings this autumn, and which ones in your opinion would be the most difficult to fill and why?
